Mile 0 - Here It Goes Again

Greetings, programs!

This is a development blog. Just a place for me to put down my thoughts and progress in being a one-person game developer. I’ll be writing about what I’m working on, challenges I’m facing, and maybe just sounding out what I’m thinking on.

About Me

I have no background in the video game industry other than I like playing them. I have no experience releasing commercial software. I live in Northern Nevada, in the middle of the Great Basin desert; about as rural as you can get and have things like Internet access and indoor plumbing.

About Last Mile Games

The name “Last Mile Games” refers to the phrase in telecommunications that refers to the end of a network segment. The one that delivers service to the end-user. Sounded pretty apropos to me seeing as I live in what I like to call “the last mile of the last mile.”

Projects

There are currently two projects in development right now: A speculative futuristic flight simulator and a third-person fixed camera RPG in a far future, post-technological singularity future. One project at a time is in “active” development, and I jump back and forth between them so that I don’t get burnt-out on either.

The descriptions below are subject to change and probably do not reflect the current or final state of either. Features that are definitely confirmed for a final product are tagged with [CONF] and lower priority features or features that I’m exploring are tagged with [POSS]. Features that I really want, but aren’t as high a priority are also tagged with [!].

Future Flight (Working Title)

A flight simulator set in a speculative futuristic setting. Features include:
  • [CONF] Realistic aerodynamics and orbital mechanics
  • [CONF] Interactive 3D cockpits and simulated air-/space-craft systems
  • [CONF] Future vehicle analogues to modern General Aviation to Airliners
  • [CONF] 1:1 scale solar system with [POSS] physics-based orbital dynamics
  • [CONF] Apparent FTL travel based on current theories to enable reasonable timeframes
  • [POSS][!] “Air” traffic controls for multiplayer traffic simulation on dedicated servers.
  • Procedures such as standard departures and approaches based on real-world aviation
  • Range-based audio communication (With the possibility of speech-to-text to accommodate players with hearing disabilities)
  • [POSS][!] Modification API to enable user-generated content (modding) to enable the addition of more celestial bodies and vehicles.

More Than Human (Working Title)

A third-person fixed perspective RPG featuring:
  • [CONF] A post-technological singularity cyberpunk setting
  • [CONF] Branching dialogues based on player decisions and allegiance to in-game factions
  • [POSS][!] Custom character creation
  • [CONF]”Natural” and cybernetics based skills and abilities
  • [POSS][!] Game mechanics based on a table-top roleplaying game.
